Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that makes it difficult for a person to focus their attention or control certain impulses. ADHD was previously thought to only emerge in childhood.1 But we now have a greater understanding of adult-onset ADHD when a person is diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.

If you are concerned that you or someone close to you may have ADHD, there is plenty of help available. Keep reading to learn who can diagnose this issue, and to review the pros and cons of online and in-person ADHD treatment.

Who can diagnose ADHD in adults?

Mental health and primary health care providers can diagnose ADHD. Psychiatrists, psychologists, primary care doctors, nurse practitioners, neurologists, physiatrists (rehab specialists), physician assistants, and licensed counselors and therapists can diagnose ADHD.2,3

There are advantages and disadvantages for each of these options. Nurse practitioners can prescribe medication but can’t offer counseling. A mental health therapist can provide counseling but not medication. Do some research before you make an appointment to be sure you visit the right health care professional for your needs.

Who can prescribe ADHD medications for adults?

While a variety of health care professionals can diagnose ADHD, not all of them can prescribe medication. Psychiatrists, primary care providers, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants can prescribe medication for ADHD.4,5

Can telehealth providers treat adult ADHD?

Telehealth providers can treat some or all aspects of ADHD depending on the services they offer. Some offer both therapy and psychiatry services, while others focus on one or the other. For example, RedBox Rx currently offers psychiatry services for adult ADHD including diagnosis, medication treatment and ongoing provider support.

Another distinction is whether the telehealth provider prescribes stimulant and/or non-stimulant ADHD medications. Stimulant ADHD medication is a controlled substance, which means its manufacture, possession and use are regulated by the government. RedBox Rx does not prescribe controlled scheduled drugs, though other online providers may offer these prescriptions with restrictions.

Stimulant ADHD medications (like Adderall) are faster acting, but more likely to cause dependency and withdrawal issues and may lead to abuse. Non-stimulant ADHD medications are slower-acting but generally considered safer. RedBox Rx prescribes non-stimulant ADHD medications, including atomoxetine and guanfacine.

What are the pros and cons of using an ADHD specialist near me compared to an online ADHD specialist?

Telehealth has become more common in recent years, making it easier for people with busy schedules or transportation issues to seek care. But if you need help with ADHD, there are advantages and disadvantages to consider for online treatment and in-person care.
