About Online Therapy

  • Talk therapy, also called psychotherapy, is one of the most common forms of mental health treatment. It takes place one on one or in a group setting with a licensed professional, either in person or online. The goal of talk therapy is to help a person identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Online therapy is talk therapy that occurs via a telehealth phone or video call.1 RedBox Rx talk therapy sessions are 60 minutes and conducted over video online.

  • Both online therapy and in-person therapy have their benefits and disadvantages.2

    Pros of Online Therapy

    • Cost. As a whole, online therapy is more affordable than in-person therapy.

    • Convenience. An online session has more flexibility with location and time for both the user and the provider.

    • Access. Online options provide access to therapy for those that have social anxiety or geographic barriers to in-person therapy. Online therapy can also be an option for the uninsured or underinsured.

    • Reduced stigma. Online therapy sessions allow for more privacy and can reduce some of the negative feelings surrounding mental health issues.

    Cons of Online Therapy

    • Technology reliant. Reliable internet and functioning devices are necessary for online therapy.

    • Limits to care. Online therapists are mostly restricted to talk therapy. If you need extra support — like medication, medical intervention or other therapies — online therapy may not be your best option.

    • Communication limitations. A video call or text conversation can make it more difficult to discern nonverbal cues or tone of voice.

    Pros of In-Person Therapy

    • Nonverbal communication. In person, the user and provider can better notice nonverbal cues, which can be helpful to the treatment process.

    • Neutral location. In-person therapy in an office provides separation from the world and can provide a preferred environment for focus.

    • Intensive support. In-person therapy can go beyond talking with art, music or other modalities. Some people also find a better connection with their provider in person.

    Cons of In-Person Therapy

    • Limited providers. In-person therapy is limited to the providers within a geographic area, making it tough to find the right fit.

    • Accessibility barriers. Many conditions can provide barriers to getting to an in-person therapy session, including disability, lack of transportation, poverty or time issues.

    • Timing. Scheduling an in-person therapy session can sometimes take days, weeks or even months due to lack of availability or scheduling issues.

    • Cost. In-person therapy is often more expensive than online therapy. Plus, there are the potential added expenses of travel, taking time off work and childcare.

  • In over 60 studies, research shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for people with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There are more than 40 studies that showed online therapy was more effective at treating depression than no therapy at all.

However, not all people are good candidates for online therapy. Most research has focused on mild to moderate forms of anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Other mental health diagnoses and more severe cases should seek additional support.3
