About Wrinkles & Skin Aging

Wrinkles and other signs of skin aging are a natural part of getting older. In fact, wrinkles can start as early as age 25.1 There are many potential causes for visible signs of aging, and also many effective treatments to help you feel your best.

  • We all age, but premature aging is when this process happens faster than it should, usually due to environmental and lifestyle factors. The most common signs of premature aging appear in your skin as wrinkles, age spots, dry skin or loss of skin tone.2

Exposure to sunlight is a top cause of premature aging. Other factors that cause premature aging include smoking, unhealthy diet, alcohol, poor sleep and stress.3

  • Wrinkles are caused by several factors — some you can control, others you can't:4

    • Age: Over time, the skin naturally becomes less elastic and drier, with less fat and collagen in the deeper layers. This process results in the lines and creases typical of wrinkling. It also causes loose, saggy skin.

    • Smoking and pollution: Smoking and air pollutants speed the aging process.

    • Family history: The genes you inherit play a big part in the look and feel of your skin.

    • Ultraviolet (UV) radiation: Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources speeds the skin's aging process, especially in people who tend to sunburn easily. It breaks down the elastin fibers and collagen in skin. Without these supportive connective tissues, the skin loses strength and flexibility.

    • Repeated facial expressions: Facial movements and expressions lead to fine lines and wrinkles. For example, every time you squint, smile or frown, tiny grooves form beneath the surface of the skin. As skin ages, it loses its flexibility and can no longer spring back. These grooves then become features of the face.

  • Wrinkles are the lines and creases that form in your skin and may be found anywhere on the body. Some wrinkles become deep and may be especially noticeable around the eyes, mouth and neck.5

  • As your body ages, you’ll notice fine lines start to appear on your body. This can start after the age of 25. The most common age group for people who look for wrinkle treatment is between the ages of 40 to 55. Wrinkles become more prominent after age 65.6

  • Since wrinkles are a normal part of your body’s aging process, they don’t need treatment. If you don’t like how wrinkles look on your skin, there are treatment options available to cosmetically improve your appearance.7

Short of medical intervention, if you want to keep your skin looking young, start with the essentials:

    • Avoid the sun.

    • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

    • Wear sun protective clothing (long sleeves and pants).

    • Don't smoke.

    • Use moisturizer.8

Anti-Aging Treatment FAQs

  • Several treatment options are available for anti-aging, including:9,10,11,12

    • Prescription creams and serums. Your doctor may prescribe an antiwrinkle product with prescription-strength retinoids derived from vitamin A.

    • Botox injections. When injected in small doses into specific muscles, Botox prevents the muscles from moving. This helps skin look smoother.

    • Chemical peel. This may be done as an outpatient procedure. A chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother.

    • Facial fillers. Facial fillers are products injected into the skin. The fillers plump and smooth lines and creases.

    • Laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing is a general term for facial rejuvenation procedures that use a beam of energy or laser to improve the skin's appearance.

    • Deoxycholic acid injections. Deoxycholic acid (Kybella) injections are used to treat excess fat under the chin.

    • Facelift and neck lift. Facelift surgery involves lifting the skin and tightening the underlying muscle and tissues. A neck lift is often done at the same time.

    • Micro-needling. This is a facial rejuvenation procedure that uses a device with several tiny needles that poke you to create a miniature wound in the top layer of your skin. This wound heals within minutes and causes new collagen and elastin to form as your skin heals.

    • Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion. These procedures gently sand or scrape away layers of skin to help regain smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

    • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Also known as a “vampire facial,” this treatment uses components of your own blood to promote collagen production and improve skin texture and tone.

    • Radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening. This noninvasive treatment uses heat energy to stimulate collagen and tighten skin, helping reduce fine lines and mild sagging.

    • Retinoids. You can find retinol in many over-the-counter skincare products that can be applied at home directly onto the skin as you would a lotion or a moisturizer.

  • Anti-aging products are available in two main forms: over-the-counter and prescription. Here are some of the top anti-aging products based on clinical research and popularity.

    Over-the-Counter Anti-Aging Products

    • Adapalene 0.1% Gel

    • Retinol

    • Argireline Solution 10%

    • Vitamin C

    • Niacinamide

    • Peptides

    • Ceramides

    • Hyaluronic Acid

    • Bakuchiol

    • Azelaic acid, up to 10%13,14,15,16

    Prescription Anti-Aging Products

RedBox Rx offers a variety of topical prescription options with low transparent prices and a $25 online anti-aging consult with one of our experienced, U.S. licensed medical providers.

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription anti-aging products differ in several important ways, including strength, regulation and how quickly they produce results. OTC products, like retinol or vitamin C serums, are widely available and regulated for safety, but they typically contain lower concentrations of active ingredients. This makes them gentler on the skin but often slower to deliver visible results.

Prescription products, such as tretinoin or tazarotene, are regulated and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for specific uses and have been studied in clinical trials. They contain higher-strength active ingredients that can more effectively target fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Because of their potency, they may work faster but can also cause more noticeable side effects, such as dryness, redness or peeling, especially when first starting treatment.

Cost and access also differ. OTC products are generally more affordable and accessible, while prescription treatments require a consultation with a licensed provider but may offer more significant, longer-lasting results when used consistently.17

  • FDA-approved prescription products are medications that have undergone extensive testing for safety, effectiveness and quality before being approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These products, such as tretinoin or tazarotene, are manufactured in standardized strengths and formulations to ensure consistent results.

Compounded medications, on the other hand, are custom-made by a pharmacist to meet a patient’s specific needs. For example, a provider may prescribe a compounded cream that combines tretinoin with other ingredients like azelaic acid. While compounded products from providers such as Curology and Musely can offer personalized treatment options, they are not FDA-approved in the same way as commercially available medications. This means they have not gone through the same large-scale clinical trials for safety and effectiveness.18

  • The timeline for results depends on the type and strength of the product you’re using. Over-the-counter products like retinol or antioxidants will take longer to produce subtle improvements in skin texture and tone because they are not as strong as prescription treatments.

Prescription treatments, particularly retinoids like tretinoin, typically begin to show visible results within 6 to 12 weeks, with continued improvement over at least three months of consistent use.19 Some people may notice smoother skin earlier, while the process may take longer for others.

  • An effective anti-aging skincare routine, especially when using prescription treatments like tretinoin or azelaic acid, focuses on consistency, protection and supporting skin health. To get the most out of your prescription skin treatment, make sure you:

    • Follow the medication directions exactly. For example, not applying too much or too little, or making sure to apply your prescription treatment at the same time each day.

    • Discuss any other skincare products you’re using with your healthcare provider. This ensures any cleansers, moisturizers and other over-the-counter products you’re using don’t interfere with your prescription treatment.

    • Watch for any irritation or side effects and report them to your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

To reduce signs of aging on your skin, it is also important to limit sun exposure and avoid smoking.20

  • It’s never too early or too late to start an anti-aging skincare routine. Starting younger can help you limit unwanted signs of aging, but even if you start treatment later, it’s possible to slow or even reverse some wrinkling and other symptoms.21

  • Retinoids are one of the most popular ingredients used in anti-aging treatments. Among retinoids, tretinoin is considered an effective treatment with well-studied anti-aging effects on the skin.22

Tazarotene is also an effective alternative, but may have more risk of burning or irritation, especially during the first week of treatment.23

  • The most effective wrinkle creams are those that contain clinically proven active ingredients. Retinoids, such as prescription tretinoin and over-the-counter retinol products, are considered an effective standard treatment due to their ability to increase collagen production and speed up skin cell turnover. However, treatments other than tretinoin have also demonstrated effectiveness. These include tazarotene and adapalene, among others.24,25

  • Some anti-aging treatments are completed after a specific time period, while other skincare routines must be ongoing to maintain results. While treatment can slow or reverse some signs of aging, there's no way to entirely prevent wrinkles from forming on your skin.26
