About Wrinkles & Skin Aging

Fine wrinkling can start as early as age 21, and some people may notice wrinkles before age 35.1 Signs of skin aging have a variety of causes and, fortunately, there are a wide variety of effective treatments to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

  • We all age, but premature aging is when it happens faster than it should. The cause is usually environmental and lifestyle factors. The most common signs of premature aging appear in your skin, with wrinkles, age spots, dryness or loss of skin tone.2

Most signs of premature aging show up in your skin. Skin changes happen as we age. When they appear earlier in life, the cause is usually from environmental or lifestyle factors.3

Exposure to sunlight is a top cause of premature aging. Other factors that cause premature aging include smoking, unhealthy diet, alcohol, poor sleep and stress.4

  • Wrinkles are caused by several factors — some you can control, others you can't:

    • Age. With aging, the skin naturally becomes less elastic and drier, with less fat and collagen in the deeper layers. This process results in the lines and creases typical of wrinkling. It also causes loose, saggy skin.

    • Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources speeds the skin's aging process, especially in people who tend to sunburn easily. It breaks down the elastin fibers and collagen in skin. Without these supportive connective tissues, the skin loses strength and flexibility.

    • Smoking and pollution. Smoking and air pollutants speed the aging process.

    • Repeated facial expressions. Facial movements and expressions lead to fine lines and wrinkles. For example, every time you squint, smile or frown, tiny grooves form beneath the surface of the skin. As skin ages, it loses its flexibility and can no longer spring back. These grooves then become features of the face.

    • Family history. The genes you inherit play a big part in the look and feel of your skin.5

  • Wrinkles are the lines and creases that form in your skin. Some wrinkles become deep and may be especially noticeable around the eyes, mouth and neck.6

  • As your body ages, you’ll notice fine lines start to appear on your body. This can start after the age of 25. The most common age group for people who look for wrinkle treatment is between the ages of 40 to 55. Wrinkles become more prominent after age 65.7

  • Since wrinkles are a normal part of your body’s aging process, they don’t need treatment. If you don’t like how wrinkles look on your skin, there are treatment options available to cosmetically improve your appearance.8

Short of medical intervention, if you want to keep your skin looking young, start with the essentials:

    • Avoid the sun.

    • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

    • Wear sun protective clothing (long sleeves and pants).

    • Don't smoke.

    • Use moisturizer.9

What Our Patients Are Saying

  • My tretinoin treatment has improved my skin so much that my family members are so impressed. Thank RedBox Rx for making it so easy and affordable to get my prescription online in a fast way. Forever a client.

    Yolanda S.
  • I realized I was almost out of my face cream and instead of calling in, making an appointment, waiting a month for appointment, having to go into appointment and pay the dermatologist $125 — all I did was get online, wait five minutes, talk to a doctor for six minutes, and I had my prescription sent to my address in less than four days. This cost $20 to see a dermatologist on here. Wow!! Not only easier but cheaper.

    Valerie Y.
  • I am grateful to have found an alternative that doesn't require insurance and I can do from the privacy of my home.

Anti-Aging Treatment FAQs

  • Several treatment options are available for anti-aging.

    • Prescription creams and serums. Your doctor may prescribe an antiwrinkle product with prescription-strength retinoids derived from vitamin A.

    • Botox injections. When injected in small doses into specific muscles, Botox prevents the muscles from moving. This helps skin look smoother.

    • Chemical peel. This may be done as an outpatient procedure. A chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother.

    • Facial fillers. Facial fillers are products injected into the skin. The fillers plump and smooth lines and creases.

    • Laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing is a general term for facial rejuvenation procedures that use a beam of energy or laser to improve the skin's appearance.

    • Deoxycholic acid injections. Deoxycholic acid (Kybella) injections are used to treat excess fat under the chin.

    • Face-lift and neck lift. Face-lift surgery involves lifting the skin and tightening the underlying muscle and tissues. A neck lift is often done at the same time.11

    • Micro-needling. This is a facial rejuvenation procedure that uses a device with several tiny needles that poke you to create a miniature wound in the top layer of your skin. This wound heals within minutes and causes new collagen and elastin to form as your skin heals.

    • Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion. These procedures gently sand or scrape away layers of skin to help regain smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

    • Retinoids. You can find retinol in many over-the-counter skin care products that can be applied at home directly onto the skin as you would a lotion or a moisturizer.

  • Anti-aging products are available in two main forms: over-the-counter and prescription.

Here are some of the top anti-aging products based on clinical research and popularity.

    Over-the-Counter Anti-Aging Products

    Prescription Anti-Aging Products

RedBox Rx offers a variety of topical prescription options with low transparent prices and a $20 online anti-aging consult with one of our experienced, U.S. licensed medical providers.

  • A simple routine should include these scientifically proven anti-aging ingredients:

    • Gentle cleanser.

    • Vitamin C.

    • Retinoid.

    • Moisturizer.

    • Broad-spectrum sunscreen.13

    And look something like this:

    Morning routine

    • Wash with a gentle cleanser.

    • Apply vitamin C serum.

    • Apply moisturizer.

    • Apply sunscreen (if it’s not included in your moisturizer).14

    Evening routine

    • Wash with a gentle cleanser.

    • Apply retinoid.

    • Apply moisturizer.

  • It’s never too early to start an anti-aging skin care routine. Never too late, either. Starting younger is better — before your skin starts to age naturally. There’s no rule saying that an antiaging routine can’t start in your 30s, 40s or 50s and beyond. While you won’t erase decades of damage to your skin, some signs of aging can be stopped, and even reversed at least to some extent in a lot of people.15

  • Nowadays, numerous skin care routines are used to rejuvenate aging skin. Retinoids are one of the most popular ingredients used in anti-aging treatments. Among the representatives of retinoids, tretinoin is considered the most effective agent with proven anti-aging effects on the skin.16

Tretinoin works by lightening the skin, replacing older skin with newer skin and slowing down the way the body removes skin cells that may have been harmed by the sun.17

  • For aging skin, dermatologists like to prescribe tretinoin and retinoic acid (Retin-A, Renova, Refissa) that are "100 times" as potent as the retinol-containing products sold without prescription. Tretinoin works better because it has a stronger capability of preventing the breakdown of collagen.18

According to a clinical study from the National Institutes of Health, amongst various anti-aging agents, retinoids are the most promising agents that are available for the treatment of aging. Amongst retinoids, tretinoin is the most potent and best-studied retinoid.19

  • While treatment can temporarily stop signs of wrinkles, there's no way to entirely prevent wrinkles from forming on your skin.20
