Tobramycin-Dexamethasone Drops FAQs

  • Tobramycin and dexamethasone are a combination of an antibiotic and a corticosteroid.1 It is used to treat eye infections such as pink eye. It works by killing bacteria that cause infections and reduces the irritation, redness, burning and swelling of the eye.

This medication treats/prevents only bacterial eye infections. It will not work for other types of eye infections. Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.2

  • Prescription tobramycin-dexamethasone drops come as a solution (liquid) to instill in the eyes. The eyedrops are usually applied every four to eight hours. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use the eyedrops exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of them, or use them more often than prescribed by your doctor.

To apply eyedrops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Shake the bottle well before each dose.

Do not wear contact lenses while you are using this medicine. Sterilize contact lenses according to manufacturer's directions, and check with your doctor before you begin using them again.3

  • Most bacterial infections will show some improvement using tobramycin-dexamethasone drops after two to three days.4

  • The eyedrops are usually applied every four to eight hours.

  • Tobramycin-dexamethasone drops are available by prescription only.5 They can be purchased online, if prescribed, through RedBox Rx. Start an online consult to see if tobramycin-dexamethasone drops are right for you.

  • Tobramycin-dexamethasone drops cost $40 per treatment (5 mL bottle) with RedBox Rx. No insurance required.

  • Before using tobramycin-dexamethasone drops:

    • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to tobramycin, other antibiotics or any other drugs.

    • Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially other eye medications and vitamins.

    • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using tobramycin-dexamethasone eyedrops or eye ointment, call your doctor immediately.

    • You should know that your vision may be blurred during your treatment with tobramycin-dexamethasone eye ointment. Avoid rubbing your eyes even if your vision is blurred. Do not drive a car or operate machinery if you are unable to see clearly.

    • Tell your doctor if you wear soft contact lenses. You should not wear contact lenses if you have any eye infection.

  • Instill the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.

  • Tobramycin-dexamethasone may cause side effects, including:

    • Eye tearing.

    • Itching, stinging or burning of the eye.

    • Swelling of the eye.

    • Temporary blurred vision.

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away.

Tobramycin-dexamethasone drops may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while using this medication.

  • Keep this medication in the container it comes in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

It is important to keep all medication out of sight and reach of children, as many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches and inhalers) are not child-resistant and young children can open them easily. To protect young children from poisoning, always lock safety caps and immediately place the medication in a safe location — one that is up, and out of their sight and reach.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children and other people cannot consume them. However, you should not flush this medication down the toilet. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community.

  • Keep all appointments with your doctor.

Do not let anyone else use your medication.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all prescription and nonprescription (over the counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
